Ruckus was founded by Arwen O'Connor, Mitchell Hawkes and Nigel Latta in 2016.
We have produced a dozen projects from Born This Way: Awa’s Story which won three awards at the NZTV Awards, to Stan the highest rating documentary of the year and Best Documentary at the DocEdge International Film Festival.

We have made two entertaining series of Mind Over Money with Nigel Latta which beat out My Kitchen Rules and The Block in the ratings. Also amongst our output was Knives Out an off-beat obs-doc on the New Zealand butchery team, three seasons of multi-platform, multi-format What Next? about the future of New Zealand, described in the NZHerald as “one of the most futuristic pieces of programming broadcast in New Zealand in years – a smart, provocative attempt to grapple with some of the most important issues of this era and the next. For TVNZ, for NZ on Air, for the very medium of television, that makes it close to a triumph.”

In 2018 Ruckus were named the Hottest Production Company in the StopPress Awards.

Arwen O'Connor

Arwen is a multi-award winning producer with two decades of television experience. She is on a hot-streak with her Ruckus projects - she produced the very well received documentary and award-winning Stan which has now also screened in Australia. She also produced Born This Way: Awa’s Story which saw her win Best Short Documentary at the DocEdge International Film Festival. Most recently, Arwen has produced The Curious Mind, Stan, Mind Over Money, Born This Way: Awa’s Story, The Hard Stuff, Nigel Latta Blows Stuff Up and many more.

Arwen is vastly experienced in all aspects of TV production which sees her projects come out on time, on budget and most importantly all money can be seen on screen. She oversees all Ruckus productions.

Mitchell Hawkes

Mitchell specialises in creating emotional stories that deal with big concepts. His last documentary about kiwi singer Stan Walker Stan won Best Director at the DocEdge International Film festival. He also filmed the story of Awa, a transgender teen. Born This Way saw him win Best Director at the 2017 NZTV Awards. In 2017 he also won best Multi-Cam Director for The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

Mitchell has written and directed many prime time series; from the science show Nigel Blows Stuff Up to The Curious Mind about the brain, from Rivers to Cadbury Dream Factory. He directed a series on pop culture and wrote the book tie-in.

He is also one of New Zealand’s leading multi-camera entertainment directors. His projects include The NZ Music Awards, X Factor, New Zealand's Got Talent as well as concerts for Ed Sheeran, The Topp Twins, Shihad and Lorde.
